Veterans Deserve Better

Media Release
Peter Whish-Wilson 10 Mar 2015

The Greens spokesperson for Veterans’ Affairs, Senator Peter Whish-Wilson, provided the following comments on the ABC’s Four Corners episode, “Bringing the War Home,” by Quentin McDermott and Mary Fallon into the lack of support for returning veterans.

Senator Whish-Wilson said, “We send these men and women off to fight wars on our behalf and yet we don’t do enough to help them cope with the horrors they faced during their service once they return.

“How can a country as wealthy as ours not provide enough funds to properly care for the soldiers who suffer from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) in the course of serving their country?

“We are spending millions this year on monuments and pageantry to honour the long-fallen war dead. Perhaps we would honour the dead better by properly caring for those who are still alive.

“The Government is spending $60 million to commemorate the ANZAC centenary. Some of that money would be better spent supporting today’s veterans.

“If true, the reported lack of care for those with PSTD, high suicide rates and the approximately 3000 homeless veterans is a national disgrace.

“There needs to be an arms-length inquiry to look into the magnitude of these problems, the level of care currently provided and what we can do to address these issues, “ he concluded.
