Liberals must back down on plans to send Tasmanian Medicare jobs offshore

Today, Greens Senator for Tasmania, Peter Whish-Wilson, stood with the CPSU to support their campaign to stop the Liberal government privatising the Medicare payment processing service in Hobart.

Senator Whish-Wilson said, “Before last year’s Federal election, the Liberals promised a Tasmanian Jobs strategy, but all they have delivered is the export of jobs from the state.

“The Liberals have cut local jobs from the CSIRO and the Australian Antarctic Division, and they have shed jobs from the Launceston ATO.

“We have also lost hundreds of jobs from Hydro Tasmania after Tony Abbott and Eric Abetz scrapped a price on carbon and put the RET in jeopardy.

“Now the Liberals are planning to send the 250 Medicare payment processing jobs offshore in Tasmania to ‘who knows where.’

“If the Government privatises the Medicare payment scheme, these local jobs could end up in Melbourne or New Zealand or even Singapore.

“If the Tasmanian Liberal Senators and MPs really cared about their constituents and the local economy they would stand up to their own government and stop the privatisation of Medicare services,” Senator Whish-Wilson concluded.
